The Philippines

By Arnine

There are many forms of transportation in the Philippines. There  three light rail lines and one commuter rail line. They are operated under the government agencies Strong Republic Transit Systems and the Department of Transportation and Communications. In addition, the country has additional transportation sources such as buses, jeepneys, pedicabs, and tricycles.

 Jeepneys

When the American troops left the Philippines at the end of WWII , there were many surplus jeeps that were given to Filipinos who then in turned stripped them down and customized the jeeps to accommodate more passengers, which added metal roofs for shade, and they decorated the vehicles with vibrant colors and a bright chrome like hood ornaments.

Jeepneys rapidly became a popular and creative way to re-establish inexpensive public transport, that had been destroyed during WWII. In recognition of this widespread use of these vehicles, the government is now regulating their use. The Jeepney drivers now must have specialized licenses, regular routes, and reasonably fixed fares.
