The HBLR system is a new light rail system, the first in New Jersey in many years, currently serving Hudson County with the Bergen County service under construction, and further extensions in planning stages which might even reach Paterson, NJ. The line was planned via a design, build, operate and Maintain system with Twenty First Century Rail being the contractor/operator/maintainer for New Jersey Transit. The original line ran from Exchange Place adjacent to the PATH station and ran to 34th Street in Bayonne and West Side Avenue in Jersey City. Extension soon followed to Newport serving Newport Mall in 2001 and Hoboken Terminal in 2002. In 2003 the 22nd Street Station in Bayonne opened with an extension to 8th Street in Bayonne under construction. In 2004 the extension to Lincoln Harbor opened. An extension to Port Imperial, Bergenline Avenue and Tonnelle Avenue is scheduled for 2/25/2006 opening. A further extension will serve the Vince Lombardi service area of the New Jersey Turnpike with intermediate stations planned for 69th Street and 85th Street. The Bergenline Avenue will be in a tunnel and the Tonnelle Avenue station just north of the tunnel under the Palisades. As of 2/11/2006 two car trains will be common and service patterns will change to have the Westside Train skip Hoboken and run direct to Tonnelle Avenue Tonnelle Avenue To West Side Avenue
