Jay Street MetroTech Complex
By Wayne Whitehorne

This station complex serves two main routes and four subway lines. Recently joined (December 10, 2010) by a free transfer connection, the two stations’ former names were Jay Street-Boro Hall (A Lefferts, A Rockaway, C, F) and Lawrence Street-Metro Tech ( R).

Jay Street (IND Station)

The IND station (A Lefferts, A Rockaway, C, F lines) has four tracks and two island platforms. The mezzanine is split into two sections, with the middle portion being let as transit offices. The station shows its recent renovations,

with new tile and platform surfaces,  as well as a number of replaced staircases. The tile band, formerly two shades of Cobalt blue, has been replaced by a new one of Midnight blue, double-bordered by black (outer) and a contrasting shade of Heather blue (inner).

This shade also forms part of the decorations that top the newly retiled pillars in the mezzanine and the southbound platform. The pillars on the northbound platform remain as I-beams, painted Copenhagen blue. The news-stand on the southbound platform is still present, as it has been for many years.

Artwork in the mezzanine is titled “Departures and Arrivals” by Ben Snead, and features birds, insects and fish (see below)

The entrances are on the northeast and northwest corners of Jay and Willoughby Street, the west side of Jay Street (just south of Myrtle Avenue) and either side of Jay Street, just north of Fulton Street. A set of escalators leads to the entrance under the front canopy of 360 Jay Street – former Transit Authority headquarters building. A neat Art Deco “Subway” pylon marks the entrance site.

Transfer to BMT line:

The transfer to the BMT R line was opened on December 10, 2010. The Lawrence Street-Metro Tech station, just a few yards east under Willoughby Street was connected to the Jay Street station via a new 175-yard passageway. These two stations, always just out of reach of one another, now form a new complex. New stairs, a new escalator and a new elevator have been installed.

Former Lawrence Street BMT station:

The former Lawrence Street station has been renamed Jay Street-MetroTech, in keeping with the NYCT policy of keeping station names in complexes the same. This station, opened in 1918, is largely as it always has been, except for the new stairway and escalator installed at the west end of the platform. The single island platform is somewhat narrower than most, and the station walls are unfinished – and painted a shade of 80% gray – giving the station an overall dreary appearance. The ceiling over the tracks is partly rounded (tube) and partly squared-off. This is because the station was added in after-the-fact (about a year after the line opened). The I-beams are painted a similarly dreary shade of Celadon green. The entrances are on the corners of Lawrence and Willoughby Streets. There is an exit-only escalator which was installed in the 1950s. There are Vickers-style mosaics on the mezzanine walls in shades of beige, yellow ochre, burnt orange, turquoise and blue – similar in color scheme to the Grand Street Canarsie Line L station. Directional tablets still point the way “To Lawrence Street”.
