What is today's Metro-North East of Hudson Service was originally the New York Central railroad. After severe financial problems the New York Central merged with the also financially troubled Pennsylvania Railroad forming the Penn Central. As a condition of the merger being approved, they had to assume operation of the also troubled New Haven Railroad. The Penn Central was a merger made in Hades and it too went belly up. Conrail was formed to take over commuter rail operations in New Jersey and New York. The federal Government later on decided that Conrail could not operate passenger service. New York formed the MTA to run the LIRR and the former Penn Central Lines while New Jersey formed New Jersey Transit. Metro-North contracted with NJT to operate the West of Hudson Service under contract.
