New Jersey Transit (NJT) runs Bus service, (some via contracted private companies) , Heavy rail service and Light Rail Service state wide.

The heavy rail  service was provided by private railroads which went bankrupt followed by Conrail. When congress decided Conrail could not run passenger service the State of New Jersey formed NJ Transit Rail Operations  (NJT) to run the rail service after having previously formed NJT Bus Operations to run the bus services, (Either directly or via a contracted private firm.) The Newark Light rail was originally a  series of trolley car  lines run by Public Service Coordinated Transport. (yes-- this is the same company now known as PSEG, Public Service Electric and Gas).
