Abandoned Stations
By Steve Bulota
14th
& Stout (
Opened:
October 7, 1994, Closed: November 27, 2004)
Reason: replaced by Convention Center/Performing
Arts station nearby. No traces remain except for “DOOR”
markings on the curb.
The layout was
identical to 16th
& Stout and 18th
& Stout. The ADA ramp was right next to the
normally unused switch that permits trains from the
northern terminus at 30th-Downing
to loop back. It merges with the n/b track right
where the northbound 14th-California
station began. This turnout was used during
service diversions on select weekends in late 2001 and
early 2002 when the Central Corridor was closed between
I-25/Broadway and 14th
St. due to construction of the Central Platte Valley
Spur. On those occasions, trains from 30th
Ave. bypassed this station and stopped only at
14th
& California. “14th
Street” was included in all destination roll signs and
trains running on the northern half of the line used
this sign during that diversion. The 14th
St. stations were at a right angle to each other.

The boarding area
was between California and Stout Streets parallel to 14th
St on the northeast side. Doors opened only to the
right. The ADA ramp doubled back. The block
length between Stout and California Sts. is such that it
could just barely accommodate a three-car train.
The rear section of the last car of a three-car train
swung out slightly past the wye where the unused loop
turnout joins the northbound track. This is a
typical block length downtown and it is for this very
reason that maximum train length was originally
restricted to three cars.
Canopies and ADA ramps at both of
these stations were dismantled in 2005 and ADA strips
removed.
