Andrés is married to Patricia “Tichi” Fernández de la Cruz, and they have three daughters. Jose is a fortunate man who has found his life mate and best friend in the form of his lovely wife, Patricia Andres. They tied the knot in 1995.

He met his wife in Washington, DC, where they both lived; she is originally from Cadiz, Andalucia, in Spain’s southwest.

The couple married civilly first, then had a true ceremony with friends in Spain. The chef and his wife, who have a true rom-com love story, have been married for nearly 20 years and are doing well. Patricia claimed that they first met in a cafe called Atlantico in Washington, DC.

Patricia is bright, calm and maternal, while Jose is impulsive, frantic and philosophical. His three daughters are called Carlota, Ines, and Lucia. Carlota, the eldest, graduated from Stone Ridge in 2017 and went to New York University.

Innes is two years younger than Carlota and attends Stone Ridge School of the Sacred Heart, also in Bethesda, alongside the couple’s youngest adolescent daughter, Lucia. Andres values his time with his daughters. In December 2013, he was naturalized as a US citizen.

José Andrés Early Life and Education

Jose Ramón Andrés Puerta was born in Mieres, Asturias, Spain. André’s family relocated to Catalonia when he was six.

He enrolled in culinary school in Barcelona at the age of 15, and when it came time to complete his Spanish military service at the age of 18, he was assigned to cook for an admiral.

He met Ferran Adrià in Barcelona and spent three years working at El Bulli, from 1988 to 1990. Adrià sacked him in December 1990, and he opted to emigrate to the United States.

José Andrés’ Career

Andrés arrived in New York City at the age of 21 with $50 (equivalent to $99 in 2020) to cook in midtown Manhattan at a branch of Eldorado Petit, a renowned Spanish restaurant. He also staged dishes at The Quilted Giraffe in New York.

He met Ferran Adrià in Barcelona and spent three years working at El Bulli, from 1988 to 1990. Adrià fired him in December 1990, and he decided to relocate to the United States.

In 1993, he was appointed to head the kitchen at Jaleo, a new tapas restaurant in Washington, D.C. In the years since, he has helped the owners of Jaleo open some restaurants, including Cafe Atlantico, Zaytinya, and Oyamel, as well as two more Jaleo locations.

Andrés opened a minibar, a restaurant within a larger restaurant, at a six-seat counter at Cafe Atlantico in 2003. The minibar is dedicated to serving the most imaginative Andrés meals, and reservations must be made a month in advance.

Andrés rose to notoriety in his native Spain following the success of his restaurants in the United States, and he starred in his culinary show, Vamos a Cocinar, which debuted in 2005. In 2005, he published his first book, Tapas: A Taste of Spain in America.

In 2006, he founded ThinkFoodGroup with Robert Wilder, making Andrés a co-owner of his restaurants. They teamed up to open more restaurants in Miami, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, and Puerto Rico.

José Andrés World Central Kitchen

In 2016, he was awarded the 2015 National Humanities Medal at a White House event for his work with World Central Kitchen.

Andrés established World Central Kitchen in response to the 2010 Haiti earthquake, which provides nutritious meals to disaster-affected families and individuals.

Since its start, the charity has served meals in the Dominican Republic, Nicaragua, Zambia, Peru, Cuba, Uganda, Cambodia, and Poland, near the Ukrainian border. It has provided help and meals in the United States and Puerto Rico, as well as support during the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States.

During Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022, José Andrés announced that he would donate a portion of the $100 million granted to him by Jeff Bezos to help ease the humanitarian situation in Ukraine.
